Moving Tips For A Less Stressful Move

They say moving is one of the most stressful life events, but planning ahead can help reduce that stress. Here then are some moving tips that can help reduce stress from potential pitfalls.

  1. Know Your True Expenses
    • Can you buy, or should you rent?
    • Will renting help you save money, and if so, for how long?
    • Most real estate websites have monthly cost calculators, but for a better comparison between mortgage and rent, keep in mind that renting won't have those pesky hidden costs of ownership.
    • If you're renting, be sure to include the costs for renter's insurance.
    • If you're using a moving company, is your estimate accurate, or can those fees start to balloon based on added linear footage or increased hours?
  2. Location, Location, Location
    • You should also try to calculate the difference in cost between locations. For example, does one location offer a shorter work commute than the other?
    • Is the location walkable or bikeable? This can add quality of life, and help reduce costs for running to nearby errands.
    • If you travel for business, how close is the nearest airport or train station?
    • Does the landscaping or topography lend themselves to energy efficiency, ideal environmental conditions, or pests?
  3. Inspect for Leaks
    • Whether you are renting or buying, nothing is more problematic and disruptive (and costly if you\'re the owner) than leaks. Whether they are Slab Leaks, Roof Leaks, or some other infiltration of moisture, you will want to have a thorough inspection by a licensed professional.
    • Leaks can upset your foundation, weaken structures, introduce pests, and cause mold.

And another bonus pro-tip for moving to/from the Palm Desert area -- try not to move during July when it's hottest. Save yourself from the heat. But if you must, be sure to drink plenty of fluids and have some water available for your movers too. Do you have other suggestions for moving tips? Let us know below!
